Because he was believed to possess the light. A Demon they called him, to others, a God. He cares not to be worshiped.
They feared him. Tried to kill him.
As they came for him, his right hand had risen. And from it sprang forth a blinding flash. In those few seconds I saw true terror in their faces. Time seemed to stand still as they turned to flee from him.
